Research focuses

Under the trend of information diversity and information mobilization, multimedia and mobile technology has become the core in 4C industry of computer, communication, consumer electronics, and digital content. The development therefore presents the urgency on national economic development, industrial competitiveness, and advanced talent development. The multimedia and mobile application lab has integrated the research energy of professors in information and communication, multimedia, and e-learning technology, providing the core platform for multimedia and mobile applications, digital learning technology, and digital content design to enhance the development of such research fields. Research on multimedia and mobile applications requires the abilities of information & communication technology and e-learning & digital content design. The research subjects contain the follows:

1. Game-based learning and content design
By discussing the practical applications of PC games, the relative computer games are developed on various computer game platforms, such as personal computers, XBOX 360, and Window Phone 7. This study aims to discuss seriously educational games, including educational PC game design, effects of games on student learning, development of subject games and evaluation of learning effectiveness, computational thinking-based geometric teaching game design, and simulation of biological group behaviors in games. It is expected to achieve the teaching through lively activities by the attraction of games.

2. Mobile and ubiquitous learning
The rapid development of mobile technology has enhanced the era of mobile learning. Learning with smartphones and the learning method with various applications have been emphasized by many researchers. Meanwhile, sensing technology, smart mobile devices, and wireless networking technology are integrated for students learning in real environments and acquiring rich digital resources and personal learning guidance that personalized learning are gradually stressed. In this case, learning is no longer restricted in classrooms; context learning integrated with living context allows more lively learning. In the research focuses, the issues related to mobile and ubiquitous learning are discussed, including the introduction of new learning strategies and tools, the design of sensing and mobile technology integrated learning system, and users' learning achievement, cognitive load and learning attitudes. With the experience in Taiwan e-Learning and Digital Archives Program, sensing technology of QR-code and mobile devices of Android phones and tablet personal computers have been studied, more than ten SSCI journals have been published, and distinct learning characteristics have been introduced into real learning fields, such as game-based learning, to enhance the richness and diversity of mobile learning.

3. Applications of context awareness and Augmented Reality
Induced by environment sensors, the context in which users situate is detected to provide users in different contexts with distinct multimedia application information which is further integrated with the context for Location-based Service. Furthermore, by combining smartphones and tablet personal computers with Augmented Reality and context calculation into a mobile device, both digital information and real context information are combined and presented for a friendly and convenient user interface.

4. Applying information technology to the development and research of e-learning system
Multimedia and network technology in information technology with the combination of theory and practice is applied to researching and developing an innovative e-learning system. From the aspect of student learning, the development and effectiveness of the learning system with adaptive digital materials, adaptive testing, and feedback is studied; and, the development and research on the production of digital materials and the recommended e-learning system are offered for teachers.

5. Mobile e-learning of PE lessons for college students
The popularity of smartphones allows students self-learning through App system in smartphones. The mobile e-learning system for Taijiquan in college PE lessons is under development, from which the applications of mobile e-learning to PE lessons are further discussed, including new learning strategies, learning achievement, and learning attitudes.
